On the Google Holiday Logos

Recently, Google changed their logo to commemorate the launching of Sputnik, the first man-made object to orbit the earth. They did not change their logo for Memorial Day. Some people are apoplectic about the perceived bias.

(As a side note: wow, is Google under a lot of scrutiny!)

The thing is, though, this isn't a political bias; it's a topical bias. Google (albeit less so every month) is a company of geeks. They don't care about political and military history; they care about technological history.

Meanwhile "don't be evil" Google has some truly evil labor practices. (via Giles Bowkett)

Comments: On the Google Holiday Logos

I am fine with what they choose. I know a lot about memorial day but I don't know a lot of about some of the holidays/days they choose to observe. Sputnik for example led to the US education system shifting their thoughts and teaching more math and science. Also the technology that came from the space race with Russia resulted in technologies like google. I won the science fair (ideas of science fairs were a result of the space race also) when I was a kid and without sputnik that would not have been possible, so thank you sputnik.

I am dumbfounded by the fact that somebody would actually care about the fact that Google hasn't been "patriotic" enough with their silly logo changes. Wow. Do some people literally have nothing better to worry about?

If you have ever, "criticized Google's logo decisions," then you are a loser.
