Who Writes Open Source Code?

According to a recent EC study:

[A]t the end of 2005, 61.2% of code had been developed by individuals, according to copyright and credit claims, while 19.2% was claimed my companies, 5.6% universities, and 7.9% foundations.

Of those companies, Sun is by far the biggest contributor, followed by IBM and Red Hat.

The top schools are the University of California system, MIT and Carnegie Mellon.

The largest individual contributors are not listed.

Comments: Who Writes Open Source Code?

I find it a bit hypocritical that you are in favor of software communism.

I know that you will say that it helps companies generate revenue and such, but then you'd have to agree that more available health care for the poor would make them better workers, which would increase productivity, thus increasing profits.

Intellectual property is one thing; goods and services are another. I don't think the same economic rules apply (for example, you can use an idea as many times as you want, without running out).

No more comments! Either someone has violated Godwin's Law, I'm tired of the discussion or, most likely, the ten-week window has closed. You can, however, contact me through email.
