The Michael Richards "Nigger" Video
I know you're looking for it: totally NSFW clip of Michael Richards (Kramer on "Seinfeld") calling a heckler a "nigger" and joking about lynching him (xxx for audio and subtitles).
(Thanks, Jordan, for finding it.)
I'll bet you dollars to donuts that he checks himself into rehab really soon and sends an apology via his lawyer.
damn. he went mel gibson on the crowd. yeah, he's headed for betty ford....
Posted by: JayP on November 20, 2006 3:33 PM | permalinkI can't believe the club let him back the next night! I guess a little controversy's good for business...just ask Mel Gibson.
Posted by: Jordan on November 20, 2006 3:43 PM | permalinkYou don't think Richards is trying to pull an Andy Kaufman?
Posted by: Max on November 20, 2006 6:01 PM | permalinkI saw some anecdote about 6 months back on a message board about a guy who had a run-in with Richards and described him as racist.
I took it with a grain of salt, as you do with pretty much any anecdote on any message board. Obviously, sounds a bit more realistic now.
Posted by: Chad on November 21, 2006 9:52 AM | permalinkYeah, I have been pissed off at people, who happened to be black, many times. And I've never called them niggers.
I also think it's telling that he chose that particular epithet, instead of referring to the "assholes" or "shitheads" in the balcony.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg on November 21, 2006 10:44 AM | permalinkI couldn't see the video that well, I'm guessing it was a cell phone or something that caught that, but clearly he has some issues, and I'm not sure he can blame it on substance abuse, he may just be a bad man...
Posted by: Kearns on November 21, 2006 4:34 PM | permalinkIt's funny that people in the South really don't use the word, despite Hollywood's message that Southerners use the word in every other sentence. Then, this Hollywood/West Coast type lets it all out. This reeks of hypocrisy...
Posted by: Od*ll on November 21, 2006 9:54 PM | permalinkCan you really characterize all of Hollywood based on one retard's actions?
Posted by: Joe Grossberg on November 22, 2006 6:55 AM | permalinkYou're calling "Kramer" a retard?
Seriously, if five years ago you said that one of the four cast members of Seinfeld was going to do this, would Michael Richards have been your first choice? I would've gone with Constanza on that one.
Posted by: Max on November 22, 2006 9:11 AM | permalinkYou're overassociating the actors and the roles.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg on November 22, 2006 11:28 AM | permalink"Can you really characterize all of Hollywood based on one retard's actions?"
Nope, same way you can't characterize the South by the actions of a few.
I didn't see the video you linked to, but I saw probably the same one on YouTube. Speaking of hypocrisy, one thing really bugs me. You can hear people saying, "Oh my God, I can't believe he said that." You also see people walking out. Some of these same people probably don't feel the least bit guilty about white flight, donut-holing poor communities further into poverty. They probably also love those movies that make black people look really stupid.
Sorry for that rant, I'm just annoyed by people who act like a certain word is the worst thing in the world when there are more important issues that are being ignored.
Posted by: Od*ll on November 22, 2006 12:59 PM | permalink*sigh*. This is great. But it's 4am and I don't have a lot of time, so I'll summarize.
The word "cracker" is derogatory. But it's origins alone imply that's it's no where near as derogatory as 'nigger'.
If black people had, for example, taken white people from Europe;
Chained and whipped them, brought them to Africa packed on boats; (throwing the ill ones over board);
Enlightened the world on the 'scientific evidence' of the stupidity, laziness, drunken and lavicious nature of whites;
Justified the extra crude treatment of whites using the bibles "Hametic curse";
Lynched, cut the fingers off white civilians, burned white peaceble churches;
Hung white men for them being white;
Poured hot tar on naked white women and children as punishment;
Demoralized, degraded, and for decades told the listening (and believing) world that whites were subhuman and simian (ape-like), all whilst calling them crackers, THEN cracker would be the same as 'Nigger'.
Now that i've gotten that out of the way. Michael Richards wasn't wrong.
They wanted to ridicule him; he ridiculed back. And they couldn't take it.
Why are they crying about it? Yes, I know the word hurts you, black audience member. It has an offense and violent history, and i'm not saying it's okay. But why start in the first place?
'You got served'.
And yes, i'm black.
Posted by: Idiot on November 22, 2006 11:18 PM | permalinkI believe it's the basis on which he decided to respond to the hecklers -- by attacking them with *racial* insults -- that has people wound up.
People can call me all kinds of names -- stupid, obnoxious, ugly, whatever -- but if they come at me with anti-Semitism, it's not to easy to brush off.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg on November 23, 2006 8:34 AM | permalinkHow about people in the audience learn to shut the fuck up and respect the performer.
Blacks who are jumping on this as racism are crybabies who try to make white people feel guilty and most likely complain about whites as well.
Michael Richards is funny as fuck. Its sad he bowed to the pressure of bringing in Reverend Jesse Jackson a guy who cant keep his dick in his pants & has kids outside of marriage.
Its rare to find a black person who is aware that he was telling a heckler to shut the fuck up. Any black comedian who goes on & on about how uncool crackers or honkies are & no one even notices or says a thing.
It makes me think some blacks are going too far & that America is the land of political correctness bullshit.
Posted by: Moesha on November 25, 2006 1:46 AM | permalinkWithout going into the hoo-ha over what was said and how .. Lets look at the cause and effect. A personal call-out got a personal response.
Sure one would think a performer would have thick skin but oh well. I typically expect a celebrity ( hey they're celebrated ) to set the "example" although this expectation is lessening as the years go on.
Michael, you just lost one fan.
Posted by: Michael H. on November 26, 2006 2:01 AM | permalinkYeah man, it's OK for him to respond. But sheesh, what does it say about the man that his response is "He's a nigger, get him out of here. He's a nigger! He's a nigger!"?
Posted by: Joe Grossberg on November 26, 2006 10:26 AM | permalinkIt's amazing how much this incident has been analyzed, not just here but on TV, radio, and in workplaces across our country.
I bet Michael Richards, even if he's going through a tough time in his life, is glad that people are mentioning his name again.
Isn't the old axiom in Hollywood that "no publicity is bad publicity"?
Posted by: Max on November 26, 2006 12:01 PM | permalinkRichards called a black person a nigger and received hell for it. Yet, not one thing was mentioned about the black person calling Richards a cracker in return. Black people call themselves niggers or excuse me, Nigga. They want a superior right to be able to say what they want but can't handle it when they themselves keep their racial stereotypes flourishing.
Posted by: yo momma on December 1, 2006 7:24 PM | permalinkKramer definitely over reacted but Americans are so hung up on political correctness that they ALways forget the human element,( remember the prohibition! ). Kramer is Jewish and I think his people have suffered as much if not more than the blacks. We are all human beings and we have the right to insult each other once in a while without making a big deal. I grew up in France of a French mother and and IRISH american father, I am and was the least racist person on this planet. I ended up in the US Army and was treated like dirt by blacks because I was kind and gentle
