The Dallas Mavericks and Steve Nash

In 2003-04, the NBA's Dallas Mavericks played their final season with point guard Steve Nash. They were 52-30.

The next year, he was league MVP with the Phoenix Suns and Dallas improved to 58-24. This year, Nash was MVP again and Dallas finished 60-22.

Dallas is also up 2-0 in the NBA Finals.

How is it that you can lose an MVP to free agency and then get better?

WTF? (Chose one or more answers, and leave your own in the comments.)

I'd like to add my own answer:

It's a combination of things: Dirk has been getting better each year he's played. You could make a case for him that he is more of an MVP than Nash. With Nash's departure, the young guys on the team have been able to develop their games with the additional playing time (i.e. Howard and Daniels). Nash is no NBA MVP. He is definitely the most important player on his team, but league-wide, he's no where near the top of the list.
