Everything You Know About Katrina is Wrong

Well not everything — that's a play on the title of a classic Salon article about the misinformation surrounding a previous tragedy — but there is a lot that has since been proved to be bullshit.

Just six deaths in the Superdome, and none were murders. No bodies in freezers and no rape victims or witnesses who have come forward. There were no people firing at helicopters trying to airlift supplies into town, and there were not 2000 school buses that sat unused.

And now, it turns out, the deaths that did occur were not disproportionately burdened by the poor or black.

The hurricane, the reponse to it and its aftermath were just awful. But people are misinformed about how it was bad, never mind why it ended up being that way.

And what about the 30 foot alligator that was feasting on stranded residents?
