On September 14, 1985, NBC introduced the world to Sophia, Dorothy, Blanche and Rose.

The reason why I know this is because the Washington Post's Express saw fit to mention this in their "This Day in History" section.

Seems like every good TV show is making it onto DVD; the GG's are no exception:

I used to watch that show all the time when I was a kid/young teenager. I also received a lot of ridicule for watching it.

Why was that show so appealing?

It's hard for me to put my finger on, but there's almost a zen-like quality to how it's filmed. Also, the fact that it was a bunch of old, white ladies (as opposed to families, teens, kids, yuppies, cops, doctors or other, more chaotic, characters) had a gentle, placid air to it.

The appeal is that (1) there are lots of dirty jokes and old ladies telling dirty jokes is strangely funny and scandalous and (2) despite the fact that there are 4 old white ladies, they dealt with many societal issues including: gay relationships, interracial relationships, mental illness, AIDS, teen runaways, etc. Everyone who came through their house was from a different walk of life.

I like your explanation. I was worried that someone would suggest that it was a suppressed sexual desire for grandmotherly women.

MMG and I were watching that show one time when I was like 9, and one of the guest characters told one of the main characters (I think it was Blanche) that she was a lesbian. So I turned to MMG and I was like "what's a lesbian?" and he was like "uh, you better go ask mom and dad."

That said, great show. Always liked. Sophia had some one-liners that are still funny.
