As this photo gallery shows, the city itself actually weathered the hurricane pretty well; it was the next days' flooding that turned things into a catastrophe.
Of course, there would still have been an economic impact, but not nearly the same humanitarian issues.

update Looks like the album has been removed. I checked other blogs' links, and they end up with the same message, so I don't know what's up. I am curious as to why the photos are gone. If anyone finds a mirror, just mention it in the comments, and I'll update accordingly.
Great gallery indeed. It's impressing to see the destruction of a town pic by pic.

Particularly good are the on-the-ground photos of "before" and "after".
Too many of the mainstream media's are from the air or aren't the same shot (i.e. some old view of the French Quarter juxtaposted with a photo of an entirely different street).
