"Late again, but that's what RSS feeds were invented for."

Before I used RSS, I used to check an increasingly large number of sites every day. Others, I would read once a week. Some, I would check periodically.

But it got annoying to:

  • Visit a site, only to see it hadn't been updated that day.
  • Remember where I'd left off, the last time I visited.
  • Visit a site time and time again, not knowing when it'd be updated.
  • Manage all this in my head.

And in comes the RSS aggregator.

Now I just visit a single site, and it tells me which of my favorite sites have been updated. If my friend David goes off to Indonesia to get married, I don't have to know when he's back, stateside and blogging — I'll get notified of it when it happens.

Same with the rare post from the Guiney brothers, Brian and Matt. I don't need to revisit their sites any more frequently than they post on them.

When it comes to a blogger like "Uncle Matt Daddy", with his frequent updates, I don't have to remember which posts I've seen.

And when I go on vacation for five days, I don't feel guilty about the few diligent readers who fathfully visit a site that is basically on "pause". ;)

Seriously, man. Add me to My Yahoo. Or subscribe through Bloglines. Or make me your "friend" in LiveJournal.

If you're visiting my site the old fashioned way — checking to see what new posts I've added, if any, and then trying to remember where you left off — you're cheating yourself.

update I have added some content after the opening sentence to better explain myself (per Kearns's comment).

Am I missing something? What does this post have to do with the cartoon? Or the "Late again" comment?
