Two Questions about Newsweek and the Koran Story
Tags:
1) "Catholic priests said that some Bibles were torn up for toilet paper" when Palestinian terrorists were holed up in the Church of the Nativity in 2002. They also stole religious artifacts, desecrated a holy site and held clergy hostage. Why were there no Christian riots?
2) "Even if this incident turns out to be false, our previous policies have made it perfectly plausible," says Andrew Sullivan, who is so happy with his statement that quotes himself two days later. Given the problems associated with notions such as "even if [evidence of Saddam Hussein's WMD] turns out to be false, his previous policies have made it perfectly plausible", shouldn't the truth be what matters?
This situation is so annoying to me in two ways:
1. I feel that desecration was probably happening and that Newsweek is being weak and retracting to please the government.
2. The people getting pissed off are total fucking hypocrites. That example of the Catholic church you gave was good, and they burn US flags all the time. Why is it ok for them to desecrate that which is sacred to others?
It's funny to think that I could take a simple book and photograph myself doing something lewd with it and have a religious death warrant placed on my head.

2) Are you saying that reasoning works with rioters?

1) I agree that, a few years hence, we'll probably learn that Newsweek recanted at figurative gunpoint. I mean, the case for making such a claim is weak, but by that standard, you would have a "corrections" section that filled half of every news magazine. As far as whether or not this specific incident happened, who knows? Neither answer would shock me.
2) I don't know, man. I have a hard time understanding the degree of explosively violent outrage involved.
Kearns:
1) I agree we should have a higher standard for the behavior of a democracy's military than for terrorists. If soldiers did flush a Koran down the toilet, I do think they are scum, on par with the thugs running Abu Ghraib. That is an interesting question, the relative importance of *who* did an act vs. *what* the act was.
2) No, reasoning won't work with rioters; God knows how many of my own people died at the hands of Christian mobs who held infinitely less rational beliefs (e.g. poisoning wells, kidnapping babies and using their blood in matzoh).
Heck, Pakistan and Afghanistan have sub-50% literacy among men; they depend almost entirely on word-of-mouth for their "news". Whom I was referring to, with this question, is a man like Sullivan, who should know better than to say "maybe XYZ didn't happen, but who cares -- it might as well have!"

Then I'm going to videotape myself standing on it, peeing on it, and wiping my hairy ass with it. Then I'll feed it to a pig.

I don't think you should be killed for it, but that would be a disgusting thing to do.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg on May 18, 2005 12:05 PM | permalinkWell, ya know Joe..given that all the people died in rioting over this, we should at least give them something to be mad about. ;)
Its a book - no better or worse than any Ann Rice novel. If people die over this then there are other larger problems. On this I *think* we all agree.
I don't agree (under any circumstance) that flushing a Quran = Electroshock of the genitals or beating someone to death in Abu Ghrab. That is obviously wrong. Per the article, Placing a Quaran near your feet is an equal insult to flushing pages from it. Would you say that placing a Quran by your feet means you are the same type of person as someone who would beat a prisoner to death?
Disrespect to a book does not make one equal to a brutal thug running a torture operation in Abu Ghrab.
