"Greasemonkey is Broken"

No, it probably isn't. I say this based on a discovery this morning: it turns out, I had installed a busted user script.

If you install the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox (which kicks ass), and find this is happening (i.e. none of your scripts are being applied), type javascript: and then reload the page. You'll probably notice a JavaScript error.

Go to Tools > Manage User Scripts.

Disable all the scripts.

Reload the page.

No JavaScript errors any more? Then we're on the right track. (If you do still have errors, there might be another issue, such as conflicts with other Firefox extensions.)

Add the user scripts back, one at a time, and reload the page.

At some point, the mysterious JS error will reappear. Uninstall the user script you had most recently enabled, and you're back in business.

FWIW, in my case, it was a script that was supposed to rewrite links to the New York Times, to avoid login/registration. It looks like it's been fixed, since.
