If Google is the king of web search, then Yahoo is proof that portals can succeed. I think there's ample room for both.
The fact that my mail, news headlines, Fantasy NBA scores, weather report, stock updates and links to commonly-used bookmarks are all on one page, and not just one domain, is why I use the "UnGoogle" as the home page on all my computers, and have done so for the past six years.
Of course, if we had a my.google.com, that might change. But I'd still use Yahoo often.
