Political Correctness Isn't Dead

It's just brain dead.

Now, believe it or not, I'm generally for being sensitive in one's language. The fact language is commonplace (e.g. being an "Indian giver", "Jewing" someone in a deal, "faggot" as synonymous for loser) doesn't mean it's acceptable.

But now it's insufficient to not be homopobic. You can't be "heteronormative" either:

"Some of the content was extremely heteronormative, and made BGLTSA members feel uncomfortable," [Harvard BGLTSA Co-Chair Jordan B. Woods] said.

Calling the comments heteronormative, according to Woods, means they implied that standard sexual relationships are only between males and females.

"Our position is that the comments weren't homophobic, but the content was specific to male-female relationships," Woods said.

And what did actress Jada Pinkett Smith say that was so outrageous?

"Women, you can have it all—a loving man, devoted husband, loving children, a fabulous career," she said. "They say you gotta choose. Nah, nah, nah. We are a new generation of women. We got to set a new standard of rules around here. You can do whatever it is you want. All you have to do is want it."

Really, now. With all the fucked up homophobia in the country, this empowered-feminist generalization that women are straight merits criticism?

Comments: Political Correctness Isn't Dead

If I hadn't forgotten my tea at home this morning, I'd have something better to say than this. "What a crock."
GLBT groups have WAY more to deal with right now than criticize "heteronormative" comments. Yeah, Jada didn't really include queers in her statement. So what. Shut up, get back to the work that needs to be done, and maybe next time she'll say that women can have a devoted husband OR wife.
In addition, isn't it sad that we put so much on a woman whose biggest achievement is being "Mrs. Will Smith?" Yeah, she was ok in "The Matrix," but really, what else has she offered society.

I really need some caffiene. Perhaps then I won't be so pissy.
