Paul Graham Feed: 2005

As you may, or may not know, I maintain the RSS feed for hacker-essayist-author Paul Graham's eponymous website.

I've kept it pretty simple, but I got emailed a request, and so I'll open up the floor for questions. Specifically, what should I do differently for 2005?

Should I:

  • Include more than the most entry in the RSS feed
  • Provide excerpts (the first few words? a key paragraph? a summary?)
  • Have an atom version in addition to the RSS one?
  • Add elements like dc:date?
  • Offer other things that may not have occurred to me?

If you read the Paul Graham feed — and there are an amazing 421 subscribers through Bloglines alone — please give me some feedback.

Comments: Paul Graham Feed: 2005

I think it is great that it is kept simple. I go to the website to read the posts anyway, and because the essays do not come very frequently, this causes me no problems. Of course, you could include the entire text and the embedded graphics and I doubt anyone would mind. :)

Seems fine as is to me. It notifies me when a new article is out.

To me it's also "just" a very handy warning. I read the entire article anyway, so I'm happy as it is. Greatly appreciated!

I'm happy with it... the only thing I'd suggest is having each item link to the article instead of paulgraham.com.

> Provide excerpts (the first few words? a key paragraph? a summary?)

yes, that would be nice.

atom too would be nice to have, but there are automatic tools for doing the conversion, so maybe you shouldn't bother.

I agree that the feed is fine as is. But adding the full text or the first few paragraphs would be nice too.

I agree that the current feed is sufficient -- thanks very much for providing this convenience service.

If you do make changes, a timestamp and direct links to articles would be nice to have.

I also think the feed is fine.

My main use of it is notification of new essays. Thanks!

Finding a new essay by Paul is like an early Christmas present. This RSS feed is SWEET!

Posted by: Ryan Elisei on December 23, 2004 1:16 PM | permalink

I have a very strong preference for feeds that include the whole text of the article.

Posted by: Seth Gordon on December 23, 2004 1:22 PM | permalink

It is fine as is and thank-you.

Posted by: on December 23, 2004 1:40 PM | permalink

Status quo is fine with me.

I would support Atom and Dublin Core stuff, because hey, more metadata is always good, right? Who knows what we'll think of to do with it in the future.

But it's eminently optional. Thanks very much for this service.

Posted by: misuba on December 23, 2004 2:26 PM | permalink

Can we have all of the above, with a chunk of text as big as possible to give a good idea of what the essay is about? Some people obviously like the minimalistic feed, so why not have both?

Posted by: Guillaume Rischard on December 23, 2004 2:50 PM | permalink

The status quo is just fine. I'd rather read the article on Paul's site (and have a look around in case there's other new stuff)

I think you can add link to some place where people could share they thoughts about Paul Grahams' articles. Like here (comments).

I frequently want to refer to an existing paulgraham.com article or essay. So I'd prefer to have a feed with a lot more of the older essays on there, or all of them (it's just as easy to see when something new comes). Since a lot of people like the way it is now, perhaps you could do it both ways?

Posted by: pik on December 23, 2004 3:50 PM | permalink

Like most I just use the RSS as a link to article, so for me, it's fine the way it is. And many thanks for providing this service for us.

Posted by: sng on December 23, 2004 4:25 PM | permalink

As has been said before, the feed is fine for me as it is because I use it mainly as a notification service to read the essays on Graham's site.

But your work is much appreciated and I sincerely thank you.

:)

I Appreciate it as is. Most have said the same thing, but I didn't think silence was a good response, So this is just another silent majority encouragement thingy.

For the current style and pacing of the essays that PG publishes, your feed is perfect for my RSS reading style.

If PG started publishing mostly essays that were only a couple of paragraphs each, it would be nice to read those directly through the feed. I like to read longer stuff in a web browser, so for PG's current essays, "just a link" is fine with me.

Also, since the essays are usually spread apart in time, I usually don't have any trouble noticing the new feed entry before another new essay comes out. If the pace were to pick up to more than once every couple of days, it would be nice to have more than just the latest essay in the feed. My ideal would be to have enough entries to cover at least the last 2 or 3 days. In the case of multiple entries, a date field would also be nice.

Thanks for providing such a nice service!

As others have said, providing a direct link to each article in the feed, not just to the main site, along with either a summary or brief excerpt would be nice. Titles alone are not always enough.

Otherwise, thanks for providing the feed.

I would be much happier if the full text of the essay were included in the feed. Failing that, it would be great if the link in the feed led directly to the essay, rather than to the splash page.

In general, fewer clicks is preferable.

Thanks for providing the feed.

Fine as it is ... short and simple ...

Posted by: woodblock100 on December 24, 2004 3:57 AM | permalink

A little more in the way of content (i.e. not just the title) would be helpful, but not essential.

Thanks.

What else to say except 'Thank you and keep up the good work!'

I'd like a couple more than just one entry, and at least a short summary (maybe the first paragraph), if not the entire article. I'd love Atom, but I can do without that. I was actually about to set my up my own scraped feed for the site (which would have done all that) when I found yours, so laziness took over.

It's cool by me. Thanks.

I like it as it is. Thanks a lot for your effort. :)

First let me thank you for setting up the RSS service. May you have a safe and happy holiday.

Next, I agree with the "more metadata" comment. Even links to other blogs discussing the essays would be very interesting.

No matter what you do, just keep doing it :-)
It's one of my favorite RSS feeds.

Thanks.

Posted by: Miki Tebeka on December 28, 2004 2:26 AM | permalink

it's already fine as it is, though a 10-item-list of the older articles (with a link to the article) would be nice. Always handy when you come back from holidays to see if you missed more than one essay.
Thanks already for providing us with this service and happy holidays.

Appreciate this feed. If you could include the full text it will be helpful as I use a outlook add-in to download the feeds.

Thank you for asking.

Joseph:

Paul has asked me to only post excerpts or summaries and I'm going to respect that wish.
