As someone about to write his first functional specification, I've got to say that Joel Spolsky's Painless Functional Specifications series (parts: 1, 2, 3, 4) and his essay Painless Software Schedules have been incredibly helpful.

Thanks for sharing that essay, it's helpful and to the point. I've always thought MS Project was a waste of time for software.
