The Times of India quotes "a programmer on Slashdot.org" on his outsourcing arbitrage.

About a year ago I hired a developer in India to do my job. I pay him $12,000 out of the $67,000 I get. He's happy to have the work. I'm happy that I have to work only 90 minutes a day just supervising the code. My employer thinks I'm telecommuting. Now I'm considering getting a second job and doing the same thing.

Umm ... yeah.

Problematic assumptions with this:

  • that the Indian isn't smart enough to cut out the middle man
  • that the employer won't do the same
  • that the Indian is ethical enough not to blackmail his "employer" for a bigger cut
  • that the Slashdotter won't get busted by the Dept. of Labor and/or IRS
  • that the employer won't ask questions about the code that the outsourcer can't answer
  • that the Indian won't find a better job
  • that it's easy to find an competent programmer halfway around the world who won't command a higher salary
  • that Slashdot commenters aren't full of shit

The best part is that the Indian guy is raking in $12K, and paying $2K to a guy in China to write all of his code. It just takes him 45 minutes a day to keep up with that, and he is doing it 5 times over...

And the Chinese guy suckered some Americans into thinking they were contributing their time to an open source project.
