Proud of Teaneck

update Here is another article on how the district has changed over the years, including some shocking statistics on "white flight".

Fifty years ago, my hometown became the first township to voluntarily desegregate its public school system.

That diversity was still nurtured through my years in the town (1979-2000), and I feel like I'm still reaping the benefits.

Comments: Proud of Teaneck

That's not actually true. Teaneck was not the first town to desegragate their public school system, it was the first to do so without a court order. Don't get me wrong, it's nice but it still took them 10 years after Brown to get it done! There's an interesting essay about it here... http://www.jfklibrary.org/pica_essay_winner_2004_sand.html

That's why I said "voluntarily".

But I agree; it's a common misconception.
