Great quote from Andrew Sullivan, summing up my thoughts on religion and politics. Religious law and civil law can, and should, exist in parallel. And adherence to the former should be on a voluntary basis.

If Christians, or others, oppose gay marriage, they should feel free to ban gay Christian marriage. If two men or women have a legal marriage, the churches can feel free to view the couples as not married by their "traditional" definition, insofar as their membership and other private matters.
