Trends in Immigration

From 1990 to 2000, the number of immigrants who went to California or New York declined from 51.3% to 36.6%.
Tyler Cowen attributes this to diminishing returns.
I would forward an alternative (and totally speculative) explanation that it's a reflection of immigrant communities in other states (esp. those in the southeast) acquiring a critical mass — enough resources, from religious institutions to ethnic grocers to colinguists, such that new arrivals face the prospect of joining a community rather than serving as pioneers.

I disagree with some of his opinions (I didn't like Ghana Cafe, Duangrat’s or Formosa Cafe' at all), but some are brilliant picks (Panjshir is mind-blowing). It's quite comprehensive and kicks the ass of Washingtonian or The Post any day.
