Yakov the Intern

Once upon a time, I worked at the parent company of Bethesda Softworks. We had an intern, Yakov, who was a gaming nerd. He had a thick Russian accent, a ginormous head and was always hitting on the chicks ten years older than him. He was enthusiastic (i.e. wouldn't shut up and let you get your own work done) if awkward (dude, it's "Bethsoft", not "Bethesdasoft").

Now, he's a college student and a freaking techno DJ and probably gets a ton of ass. Go go gadget intern!

Comments: Yakov the Intern

I think I was technically a paid intern there (on paper) before I was 18.. maybe.

I don't remember Yakov, did he work there after I left? I think most of my memories of 1370 has been repressed, replaced with computer knowledge, or killed by NYC drinking habits.

John Wehr (memeufacture.com) was my intern here a MOB for a summer. He's getting ass (read: not even taking any classes) down at FSU now.

Yeah, when I spent the semester in Australia, I didn't go to lectures for months at a time.

I think Yakov was there after you'd left.

God, that place.

I miss is the Kenny food, the fact they had decent looking chicks for a computer place, the opportunity to make sites that looked gorgeous and the sheer amount of free time. I must have read half the O'Reilly catalogue while I was there.

No, by not taking any classes.. I mean, he's already earned his BS and is living there because the parties are good, the girls are hot, and the living is cheap.

Kenny food and decent chicks are definitely something I haven't had since I've left. But then again, I haven't worked anywhere that imports most of their employees since then! The gorgeous sites thing I've done since then, and at this point I really just don't give a fuck about the web. It's a pain in the ass to develop for, and web "applications" are no fun to use.

You must've had more free time than I did. I have a lot of free time at the moment, but I'm pretty good at finding bullshit open source stuff to do that makes me forget that I'm getting paid to mostly just sit here sometimes.

Wow, who's paying you? I thought you did contract work.

Web development is definitely a pain in the ass. But I'm still learning a lot, and that keeps my interest.

I don't think ZM ever had a good idea of what to do with me, other than the DHTML that Dreamweaver couldn't handle and some basic server-side stuff.

Well, I'm glad I checked your blog first - I was about to email you about Yakov. I guess you are probably the originator of this information.

Oh, who'd you hear from? Mike via Steve via me?

Posted by: Joe Grossberg on January 7, 2004 5:03 PM | permalink

Yeah, that is the direction in which I believe the "grapevine" grew.

I would have IM'ed you but you still have me blocked.

Which is probably a good idea.

I worked for WDDG when I got up here, now I work for MOB (mastersofbranding.com). I'm CTO here, Rich is one of the three partners. You may remember him, he was one of the Catholic people at Vir2L, we left at the same time. We were actually roommates here for the first 2 years.

We did a lot of RFID related work for a while. Not doing any tech projects at the moment, so I'm not really doing anything important. We are working on RFPs and such, but I'm not actually developing any (commercial) software at the moment.

Heh, I don't have you blocked. I've had Yahoo Messenger on once in the past year or so, and that was to send you a message to see if you were on.

Bob:

Yeah, I remember Rich. I almost worked with him at Ziff(?) in NYC.

MOB ... I had forgotten ... that's a phat client list you guys have.

O'dell:

I meant I don't see the real O'dell ... ;) ... online anymore.

It was Zeff.. but the parent company went bankrupt shortly after Rich started MOB so it doesn't really matter.
