DEBKAfile analysts have an interesting theory as to why Saddam looked like shit and why he was taken alive, unlike his sons: his "capture" was a face-saving spin the less glorious reality that he'd been apprehended by Iraqis interested in the $25 million bounty.

I'd buy that story. For some reason, I don't believe the official bit about a "series of interrogations" leading to information about where he was hiding.

Then again, for all we know, this guy could be a Saddam "double" or even an actor posing as him to help regain support amongst the American people for our presence in Iraq. I expect WMDs, real or planted, to be found within the next three months.

I'd say this is pretty moot. Letting hair & beard grow is a natural camouflage, but it doesn't have to mean it has grown in there. The article tries to link up too many things. I'm curious though what juicy story the officials will sell to the world.

An interesting idea, and maybe true. Still, that article is 100% speculation when it comes to its actual thesis about Saddam being a prisoner. It's about as valid as me saying "Well, I think he looked like that because he was a big fan of Lord of the Rings, and he just wanted to look like Gandalf."

Which, by the way, I DO believe.....

Ha ha, good theory there, Joe, but the Bush administration would say that was going to dress as a Santa and come to the US to hand out toys infected with anthrax.

First, there's no way his beard & hair grew out that much in just 3 weeks. He's clearly been letting his hair & beard grow for a long time.

Second, there wasn't just a weapon "nearby" -- he was CARRYING a loaded pistol.

Third, reports are that he is NOT being cooperative, contrary to some early reports.

So while it is possible that Saddam was being held prisoner, I think the "evidence" the article uses to back up that theory is a little shaky...
