No Seuss for You!

update The author has contacted me and the story in question was never intended for publication; it was part of a private mailing list. It might still be legal to publish that, but I think it's in poor taste (since the author is not a public figure). Accordingly, I've removed personal references/attacks and would like to change the gist of this post to: Is it "The Lorax" really anti-Capitalist?

update The story's been removed with no explanation. If you don't want to open your writing up to criticism, why put it on a blog in the first place? That's just intellectual cowardice. [Note: He did not put it on the blog; someone else did without his consent.]

Oversensitive political correctness is bad enough coming from the Left. It looks just as ridiculous coming from the right, as I read that someone dissuaded his daughter's preschool teacher from reading Dr. Seuss's "The Lorax" because it was too "grossly anti-Capitalist".

Guess what—some capitalists are willing to trade long-term sustainability of an enterprise for greater short-term gains. And that story describes one such fictional character. That doesn't make it inherently anti-Capitalist. Sheesh.

Comments: No Seuss for You!

Heh, for a second I thought you were going to talk about the sophomoric movie that just came out.

This is the first time I've seen that story referred to as anti-capitalist. People tend to say that this was Seuss's *environmentalist* story.

Hey, maybe we should stop reading children _Green Eggs and Ham_ as that story obviously glorifies the Russian Coup d'Etat of 1917. Or maybe I'm reading too much into a book for children.

This is also the same bunch that gave us "In Defense of Scrooge" last year: http://www.joegrossberg.com/archives/000102.html

Ok, now I know not to take those guys seriously on anything.

And how have you not seen or read _A Christmas Carol_ (should be underlined, not in quotes, btw) in any form or fashion? Almost every tv show I can remember has alluded to it at one point or another.

Actually, while I'm nit-picking the underlining of a book title, "Green Eggs and Ham" should be in quotes. To be safe, just italicize everything, as that is acceptable for both short and long works of literature.

I dunno ... I didn't grow up with Christmas. You should have heard how are garbled the lyrics in pre-school (e.g. "Then one froggy Christmas Eve, Santa came to say ...").

I know, generally, that Scrooge was a stingy, grumpy boss, etc. Just like someone who hadn't seen Star Wars could infer what a Jedi was.

Did you grow up with a tv? You'd would have needed some serious tv monitoring to avoid it.

Yes, we had a TV, though we were limited to one hour of "TV time" per day.

Usually, that was used up by He-Man, Transformers and G.I. Joe (we'd fib about the extra half-hour).

I agree with your interpretation - it can be seen as a warning to other capitalists about sustainability.

In the end though, as I told this guy, he has no right to dictate what the class does. His daughter should be pulled to the side during that time, if he truly objects. Just like how you handle kids with anti-evolutionist parents. If you don't want them singled out, then let them participate, but then teach them what you you feel is the truth afterwards.

I don't know where to start.

I think I'll just weep in the corner.

If I have to hear "Oh the places you'll go" one more time, as people ignore Seuss' greatest masterpiece (The Lorax), I think I'm gonna puke.

And I'm about as capitalist as they come.
