The ACLU and Spam

And now some good news. In response to a blogger's complaints, the American Civil Liberties Union now allows members to opt out of third-party mailings.

Unfortunately this doesn't retroactively change the fact they sold my mailing address like a dirty whore (you should see all the political crap that's stuffed into my mailbox).

But better late than never.

From now on, I'm going to follow the old trick of putting a unique indentifier in the "Address Line 2" field (e.g. "ACLU Dept."), so I can tell who gave my info to spammers. I never give them my phone number (when it's required, I put something like "(703) 555-1212") and only give them my Hotmail address.

I've heard some people use their own domain and email aliases that redirect all email into one mailbox, to give each website a different email address. That way when someone sells your email, like say abcnews or gradfinder, you can just deep 6 all email that goes to it.

No more comments! Either someone has violated Godwin's Law, I'm tired of the discussion or, most likely, the ten-week window has closed. You can, however, contact me through email.
