In one of the best letters to the editor that I've ever read, historian Robert Carver refutes the many who claim that the US is a Christian nation and that separation of church and state is a revisionist reading of the Constitution.

Just because 84% of the population is Christian, and holidays like Christmas are recognized by the government, it doesn't mean that the US is really a Christian nation!
But, yes, we are not and never were a theocracy.
