9/11: It Happened Here Too
Tags:
A lot of people seem to be forgetting that Sept. 11 wasn't just the World Trade Center's collapse. Nor the brave passengers of Flight 93, for that matter.
At 9:43 a.m, terrorists crashed a plane into the Pentagon, stealing hundreds of lives and forever altering many others.
Here's an example of what I'm referring to.
At the time, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania were much closer to home for me than NYC, so I mostly think about those, despite the intense media coverage of NY.
And, as one person at Zenimax/BSW told me on that day, "Welcome to the Police States of America." A slow and different kind of collapse...

Posted by: Joe Grossberg on September 11, 2003 3:34 PM | permalinkThat's right, it's in March or April, but this is a great time to bring it up.
Posted by: O'dell on September 11, 2003 3:37 PM | permalinkI think there are quite a few meaningful differences, but you ought to include the 90's WTC bombing too. Same building, same goal, same form of religious extremism.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg on September 11, 2003 3:51 PM | permalink That's another good one - six died, 1000 injured. Most people don't remember that they wanted to take the WTC down in 1993. Considering how easy it was for them, if they had planned things better, they could have done a lot worse.
I wonder if families of those six people qualified for any of that 9/11 money.
Forgetting? What are you complaining about? No one forgets the pentagon, or flight 93, or OKC, or every week in Israel, etc etc. Let people remember, observer, or pay their respects in the way that is closest to them. Is their something wrong with paying homage to the victims of the WTC and not explicitly mentioning the other events of the day?
Posted by: ben on September 12, 2003 5:46 PM | permalinkMany people don't view the victims at the Pentagon as civilians, but rather as casualties of war. I think that is why they are often ignored.
And in response to the Waco comment, COME ON! Please!

What? The innocents inside (yes, some wanted out, and some were salvable, especially the kids) didn't deserve that. The government commited an act of terrorism there, and we should remember that.
Terrorism:
"The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons."
The government unlawfully killed all of those people. I don't think that anyone was punished for that.
