update mezzoblue has some further commentary on Fahrner.
There are advantages and disadvantages in using images to display text (for example, a title/logo). Obviously, images look better, and give much more flexibility. However, text can be adjusted to meet the users' size and font preferences, it is more accessible for the handicapped, it's indexed by search engines, etc.
The Fahrner Image Replacement Technique is a compromise of sorts. It uses both, employing CSS to hide that text and put the image in its place.
Kryogenix addresses some lingering problems with their solution.
