Netscape R.I.P., Mozilla Lives On

Goodbye Netscape. Here is the official press release.

AOL has ceased funding for Netscape (though the open-source Mozilla continues) and is reassigning the employees to different divisions within the company.

Shit, why should AOL have been spending money on the project, since they themselves don't use it and just signed that phat settlement with Microsoft? As far as I see it, AOL doesn't need Netscape and Mozilla doesn't need AOL. In fact, considering how much corporate programmers whine about management edicts (myself included), this could be good news for the software itself.

I wonder if AOL will let the Mozilla project use the "Netscape" name; it's got more recognition than anything other than Internet Explorer.

By the way, shouldn't this have made Mozilla's news section?
