Thoughts on Jerry Krause and Michael Jordan

update Heh. Looks like this was a moot point: "Jordan said Tuesday that he has no interest now in replacing Jerry Krause, who unexpectedly resigned as Chicago's general manager because of health problems."

Jerry Krause, General Manager of the Chicago Bulls during both of their "three-peat" championship runs, has retired.

According to ESPN's Marc Stein there is lots of talk about Michael Jordan becoming the Bulls' GM when he retires from the Washington Wizards after this season.

I agree with Marc that it would be a really bad idea, for the reasons he mentions and one that he doesn't: Michael Jordan is really bad at putting together a competitive basketball team.

Look at his work with the Wizards:
  • they wasted a first-round pick on Kwame Brown and then benched him when he did show promise (earlier this season)
  • they traded away their one young star — Rip Hamilton — for Jerry Stackhouse, whose game is basically redundant with Jordan's
  • they bolstered their roster with veterans who have nothing left to offer (Bryon Russell and Charles Oakley), in an attempt to make the playoffs, instead of someone who could contribute in the long run
If I was a Bulls fan, the last thing I would want would be having Michael Jordan mess with the roster.

Comments: Thoughts on Jerry Krause and Michael Jordan

I strongly agree with that as well. My main concern is that he may try to use his pull in Chicago to pressure player additions/trades. However, given the way his relationship had been with GM John Paxson and scout B.J. Armstrong in the past, I'm sure he'll be properly boxed out should he make any inclinations towards the front desk . I love him as a player though but I believe in Chicago right now and they have a very good shot at getting to the second round of the playoffs the way they are.
