AOL Communicator

update more info from a Reuters story.

I wonder if this is the new secret project my friend Joe is working on.

Initial thoughts:
  • Looks a lot like Mozilla Mail (which isn't a compliment).
  • The naming is unfortunate, since there's already a Netscape Communicator.
  • If you can't IM people on Yahoo, MSN and ICQ, then you're gonna need at least one other IM app running.
  • You can't POP Hotmail and Yahoo mail accounts, so you still need a browser.
  • I don't find myself yearning for new features in my mail and IM clients.
I just don't see how this better than using GAIM for IM and Mozilla for everything else. Here's an old eWeek article (inaccurate title, because it doesn't browse websites — the main function of Netscape).

Comments: AOL Communicator

There is a way to get Hotmail mail without a web browser. More recent versions of Outlook Express allow you to send and receive mail for a Hotmail account. But, yeah, it is most likely not POP.

However, I believe that you must still sign up on the website.

No more comments! Either someone has violated Godwin's Law, I'm tired of the discussion or, most likely, the ten-week window has closed. You can, however, contact me through email.
